THE GIR£S’ HOSTEL

YESTERDAY’S RESULTS. The collectors for the Y.W.C.A. brought in last night a total of £152 as the result of the day’s operations. The day was unfavorable from a weather point of view. The collectors were entertained ? to tea by Mrs. V. Duff, and addressed by the Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson), who complimented them upon their success and spoke interestingly of the work of the Y.W.C.A. To-day the campaigners will begin their house-to-house canvas. The purchase of a hostelry is not everything. The hostelry is, of course, the rallying point, the headquarters of the activities of the Y.W.C.A. It is in New Plymouth but a commencement of a social work which is directed to the protection amelioration of the conditions of girls and women. There are a hundred ahd one ways of assisting to make life and brighter for our neighbors, and the Y.W.C.A. fosters and. encourages" the community spirit. Its aims are entirely unselfish. It seeks to render help and service, to bring people together, to give them a fuller appreciation of all that is best in life, and to help those in need of help. It deserves the support of the whole community, and it is hoped all will give freely according to their ability, so forwarding a cause of such great value to the community. Last evening the New Plymouth Male Choir gave a concert at Okato on behalf of the Y.W.C.A. funds. The hall was filled, and the concert was much enjoyed. It is hoped as the result of the concert, etc., a sum of £5O will be raised. During the evening Miss Birch, in a short speech, explained the objects of the campaign, and said that the hostel was for the use and benefit of country people as much as for townspeople, and therefore deserved their support, which she was sure it would receive. FURTHER QUESTIONS. <f WILL THE GIRLS’ HOSTEL GET FILLED?” Business men have affirmed that they have heard of more skilled workers who would come here from the cities and other places if they were sure of a place for them to live in. It has also been stated that young women have left this town because they could not find suitable boarding accommodation. In Whangarei, with a population of little over 2000 people, a Y.W.C.A. hostel was opened last December. It was to house 13 girls. “Will it be filled?” The people asked in doubtful tones. Soon ways and meana were improvised to take in 17 girls, and in four months there was such a big waiting list that only the stringency of the times prevented the 'Women’s Board of Directors, and the Men’s Advisory Board from securing‘a sufficient overdraft at the bank to build on the necessary extension of premises which was needed there. We confidently expect that in New Plymouth, where a larger proportion of girls are employed who live away from their homes, the hostel will not only soon be filled, but here, too, there will be a waiting list, LIST OF SUBSCRIBERS.
