PALMERSTON STATION.
DEVIATION OF THE RAILWAY. THE COMMISSION’S REPORT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Commission appointed to inquire regarding the niiiway facilities at Palmerston North and ths deviation, of the Wellington-New Plymouth railway between Paekakariki and Marton has presented its report.
The Commission is of opinion that the present facilities for the conduct of railway business at Palmerston North are quite inadequate and the operations of tljf? department can, under present conditions, only be carried on at considerable danger to the staff and the public. The great expenditure and destruction of buildings involved in securing a sufficient area of lind to provide far present and future requirements at the site of the present station renders it practically impossible to retain the station at that site. The Commission recommends a scheme proposed by the department for the deviation of the present line, commencing at Longburn and rejoining the present main line between Terrace End and Bunnythorpe. The Commission adds that it is not desirable that any deviation of the WellingtonNew Plymouth railway should be made between Paekakariki and Marton.
