AUSTRALIA v. CAMBRIDGE. UNIVERSITY MAKE 220. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyrigfit. London, June 1. The weather was fair but unsettled for the match, between Australia and Cambridge University.,Despite rain over night, the wicket was good. The attendance was 4000.
Gilbert Ashton (Cambridge) won the toss and sent in Hill Wood and Mcßryan, and McDonald and Mailey were the bowlers. McDonald’s first ball went for four byes. When the total was 13, McDonald removed Hill Wood’s off stump. Gilbert Ashton made nine before Ryder caught him off McDonald.— 2 for 27. Hubert Ashton came next, and Mcßryan 'became lively, hittingthree boundaries in succession off Mailey. Ryder replaced McDonald at 35. The half century was hoisted in 4S minutes. Eight runs later Mcßryan was caught at the wicket. Chapman came next, and Hendry vice Malley, at 59. The scoring was steady. McDonald resumed in place of Ryder at 72. Hendry missed Chapman off McDonald when he had made 13, but two runs later he accepted a second chance. At luncheon the score was four for 82, of which Hubert Ashton had made 20. On resuming the weather was fine. McDonald and Hendry had charge of the bowling. Claude Ashton accompanied his brother, but had a short stay. When he had made five McDonald found his wicket with a break-back. Doggart followed, and Hubert Ashton continued fine, aggressive play. The century was hoisted in 110 minutes. Mailey bowled in place of Hendry, tho latter going on at the other end. Whop the score was 134 Oldfield missed Hubert Ashton, a difficult chance off Hondry. He signalised his escape by hitting Mailey for three successive fours. Armstrong relieved. Mailey at 162, and in the first over bagged Doggart leg before.—6 for Td2. Ryder bawled from the other end. Even against Armstrong Hubert Ashton was aggressive, but the fielding kept down the score. McDonald came on instead of Ryder at 192, and the second hundred was hoisted in 162 minutes. Hubert Ashton compiled his century in 135. minutes. Lowry (New Zealand) stayed with him for half an hour, but when 18'he put up a skier and was caught at fourth slip. With Hake in Hubert Ashton was struck by one of McDonald’s fast balls on the left hand. It dislocated his first finger and also strained his side. It is unlikely he will appear for the remainder of the match. His innings was the breeziest and most brilliant played against the Australians. It occupied 140 minutes, He hit 19 fours. His cutting, driving and leg hitting were of the highest character. Armstrong accounted for the last two wickets, Gi'bspn and Marriott, in the next over.
Bardsley and Mayne opened for the Australians, and Gibson and Marriott had charge of the bowling. Australia started badly. When Bardsley had made a single, Chapman, at extra cover, brilliantly threw down his wicket. Macartney helped Mayne to carry the total to 24, and then went in a, similar manner to Bardsley, Gilbert Ashton making a quick return which the bowler diverted on to the wicket. A feature of the play was the fielding and picking up on ■the run. Andrews was soon busy, and 50 appeared iu 42 minutes. Mayne, at 14, was dismissed by Marriott. Andrews and Pellew played out time. Fast scoring and running between thd wickets added 45 in 20 minutes. The century was reached in 75 minutes. When stumps were drawn Australia, had three wickets down for 107.
