TARANAKI LADIES’ TOURNAMENT. OPENING DAY'S PLAY. The Taranaki ladies’ golf, tournament opened on the New Plymouth Club’s course at Walwakalho yesterday morhitfg in good weather. After the heavy rain of the previous day the course was slow, and it was a day for irons, but the greens and fairway were, under tie circumstances, in verj’ good order. The oppressive weather was a distinct drawback. In the morning the qualifying round of the championship was played, Miss Gaunbrlll (Miramar) leading the eight to qualify with 96. Miss Gambrill, who is one of the leading lady golfers in New Zealand, won the Taranaki championship last year, but she was 'defeated in the first round yesterday afternoon by Mrs. Grace (Wanganui), 4 up and 3. The four remaining in the championship at the end of the day’s play are: Mrs. Grace (Wanganui), Mrs. McLean (Hawera), Miss Gavin (New Plymouth), and Miss Rundle (New' Plymouth). In conjunction with the qualifying round of the championship, a medal handicap was played, Mrs. Surrey (Inglewood) winning with 111—26- 85. In the afternoon there was a bogey match, which was won by Mrs. Grace (Wanganui), whoso handicap of 8 gave her all square. A contiguous putting competition was held, Miss Rundle winning with a card of 15, while Mrs. M. Gray, Miss Brewster, and Miss Read each returned 16.

The tournament will be concluded to-day, play commencing at 9.30 a.m. sharp. The final of the championship will be played this afternoon, and the prizes will be presented by Mr. C. H. Weston about 4 o’clock. Details of yesterday's play are:— THE CHAMPIONSHIP. QUALIFYING ROUND.
