Miss Gambrill, who is one of the leading lady golfers in New Zealand, won the Taranaki championship last year, but she was 'defeated in the first round yesterday afternoon by Mrs. Grace (Wanganui), 4 up and 3. The four remaining in the championship at the end of the day’s play are: Mrs. Grace (Wanganui), Mrs. McLean (Hawera), Miss Gavin (New Plymouth), and Miss Rundle (New' Plymouth). In conjunction with the qualifying round of the championship, a medal handicap was played, Mrs. Surrey (Inglewood) winning with 111—26- 85. In the afternoon there was a bogey match, which was won by Mrs. Grace (Wanganui), whoso handicap of 8 gave her all square. A contiguous putting competition was held, Miss Rundle winning with a card of 15, while Mrs. M. Gray, Miss Brewster, and Miss Read each returned 16.
