BOXING.
“A NEW ZE.VLAND FEATHERWEIGHT.” London, April 7. Any New .Zealafider who attended the boxing contests at the National Sporting Club this week, in. the hope of seeing a representative of the Dominion distinguish himself, must have been sadly disappointed. A most attractive series of matches was presented, but there was one exception. Unfortunately, the exception proved to be the match in which Alf. Lewis, who was billed as “the feather-weight champion of New’ Zealand,” met a Glasgow man, Nick M'Adam. One had been led to expect a good fight, for preliminary notices favored Alf. Lewis, It seems that Lewis left England some years ago, and boxed in San Francisco and Australia. He lived in New Zealand for three years. About two months ago he came to this country with the Intention of pursuing his boxing career.
Lewis’s 15-round match with M'Adam had been advertised as the “star-turn," and came at the end of the programme. 1 When Lewis appeared, however, te lobked decidedly ill, and a three-day’s growth of beard raised some comment and amusement amongst the spectators. He met his opponent with a certain amount of assurance, showing some style, and footwork for half a. minute. But. M’Adam was qu!.ck to get in a right hook following a straight left hand, which brought Lewis to the ground, and he took a count of six. It was merely a matter of seconds before he was down again, and took the full limit of the time. After that Lewis made one other feeble attempt, fell, and remained down until he was counted out. Even though he may have been outclassed, Lewis showed neither spirit nor ability, and the result of the contest was received with :‘.n absolute lack of enthusiasm by the spectators.
