ACCIDENT AT MINE.

CAGE FALLS 600 FEET. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Waihi, June 1. The iron cage at No. 4 shaft in the Waihi mine broke away from the wire rope and fell with terrific force some GOO feet from the Bth to the 12th level, where it struck a penthouse and was flattened out. Grave concern was felt for the safety of four miners’ working at the 13th level and the shaft pumpman, and as means of ingress was blocked by the shattered cage, it was some time before a rescue party could get into touch with the workers and relieve the anxiety of those overhead with the announcement that all were well below. The cause of the accident is not yet clear.
