Mr. Mays put in the evidence at the preliminary inquiry. He said it was admitted that everything possible Was done by the masters of the two vessels to avert the collision. The qttesion was whether the Whakatane anchored too close to the Codrington and whether the Whakatane should have had more than one anchor down. This it appeared was by the advice of the harbor master, so that the cable could be easily slipped if necessary/ It was also a question whether a 60-fathom chain waS sufficient to allow on the anchor.
Auckland, Last Nighf. At the inquiry into the collision between the steamers Admiral Codrington and Whakatane in Gisborne roadstead, the Nautical Court found that unusual and abnormal weather conditions were the cause of the accident, and that it was not due to, nor in any way contributed to by, the negligence or default of any person.
