CHARGE OF THE ISRAELITES
WHY THE TROOPS FIRED. NATIVES ADVANCED WITH DAGGERS. By Teleffrapb —Press Assn —Copyright Received May 31, 10.30 p.m. Capetown, May 30. At the magisterial inquiry coneerningthe deaths of the natives at Bullhoek, Colonel Woon stated that instructions to the officer commanding were not to fire unless attacked. When the Israelites advanced, armed with daggers and asaegais. he ordered a squadron of 25 men to fire one volley, in the hope of checking them, but this failed to retard the advance. He then gave the order for five rounds. He did not use machine guns. The charge was not repulsed until the Israelites were within twenty-five yards of the troops. —Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
