EAST COAST NATIVE LAND.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, May 17.
The Hon. J. G. Coates, who is touring the East Coast, reached Te Araroa today. A deputation at Ruatorea urged the consolidation of the Crown interests in the Native blocks. At present the Crown interests are so scattered that it is impossible to do anything in the way of settlement. Much discussion ensued as to the possibility of exchanging Crown for Native interests for the purpose of effecting the consolidation of both. Mr. Coates said it was apparent the Crown had a big investment of little value. He agreed to place the proposals before the Minister of Lands.
A BRIDGE ON FIRE. Wellington, May 17.
Early on Monday morning fire destroyed two spans of the Mohaka bridge, and, but for the good work of residents, the whole bridge would have been destroyed. The residents pulled up the planking of the bridge, and, while so doing, part of the bridge collapsed, carrying two of the workers into the river with it. They, however, were rescued without much difficulty, but had a miraculous escape.
