CRIME IN AUCKLAND.
SUPREME COURT OASES.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. At the Supreme Court, Alfred Barrett was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for an assault which the Judge characterised as brutal and cowardly, assuming in prisoner s favor that his violence was occasioned by liquor.
William Richard Lock wood was ordered to enter into a bond to be of good behaviour, to abstain from intoxicants, and to pay the costs of the prosecution. The evidence showed that while under the influence of liquor, accused had thrown a sugar basin in his house, striking his two-year-old son on the face, resulting in the loss of an eye. The jury returned a verdict of common assault, with a recommendation to mercy. Hugh Bell, for theft from the person, was placed on two years’ probation and ordered to abstain from intoxicants.
