SEAPLANE DOWN.
S.WIFT DROP ON THE WATER,
TWO OCCUPANTS UNINJURED.
By Telegraph. —Pres. Association Whangarei, Last Night. A serious mishap occurred yesterday afternoon to a seaplane carrying the return mail from Onerahi to Auckland.
A strong* and gusty wind was blowing when the journey was commenced, the engine was working badly, and the pilot had some difficulty in getting the plane to rise. Before any height was reached the engine stalled, and the plane hit the water at a great speed and dived, the mechanic being thrown out. The weight of the engine dragged the nose of the plane to the bottom in twelve feet of water. The pilot and the mechanic held on until a launch effected their rescue. The mail was saved. It will be necessary to cut the planes off the machine before it can be towed in, and this operation is proceeding.
