Evidence was given at the cargo pilfering inquiry that thirteen cases supposed to contain leather from America, valued at £2v75 were found packed with rubbish, including papers bearing dates showing that the substitution was made between dispatch from the factory and departure of the vessel. MOUNT MORGAN STOPPAGE. Received May 16, 8 p.m. Brisbane. May 16. The Premier states that proposals are under consideration for giving the Mount Morgan Company direct assistance to enable it to resume operations, provided the company is prepared to adopt the scheme which the unions involved have endorsed. BOUND OVER. Received May 6, 8.5 p.m. Sydney, May 16. Judd, on a charge of offensive behaviour during the loyalty demonstration in the Domain a week ago, was bound over in the sum of £lOO to be , of good behaviour for twelve months. Notice was given of the intention to appeal. THE AMERICAN TARIFF. Received May 16, 8.5 p.m. Melbourne, May 16. Mr. Massey Greene states that there is no reason to believe America, in imposing higher duties on primary products, has any intention of discriminating against Australia, as the latter has not been regarded as a serious competitor with American producers. MOTOR SHIP LOST. Received May 16, 8.5 p.m. Melbourne, May 16. News has been received that as a result of grounding on a coral reef in ■the Chagos group, the motor ship Elmaren is a total loss. NAVAL DOCKYARD SCANDAL. Received May 16, 10.30 p.m. Sydney, May 16. Giving evidence at the Cockatoo dockyard inquiry, a foreman plater stated there was a scheme in operation at the island by which a plater in thirteen weeks actually earned £224.
