CRIME IN AUCKLAND.
SUPREME COURT SESSIONS.
MASQUERADED AS CLERGYMAN.
By Telegraph.—Press Association Auckland, May 16. Mr. Justice Stringer, in his charge to the Grand Jury, at the Supreme Court criminal sessions, said in reference to the charge against Cornelius McDevitt of bookmaking, that they would have no difficulty in finding a true bill. It was somewhat unfortunate that there should be a good deal of difference of opinion whether it was wise legislation to make the business of the bookmaker a criminal offence. The Court had nothing to do with that. There was the law, and both jury and judge were concerned only in the administration of the law. * There were 32 cases on the calendar. Auckland, Last Night.
At the Supreme Court, Claud Osmond Barker, who at Easter masqueraded as a clergyman and issued several valueless cheques, pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to three years’ gaol.
