Dr. C. J. Reakes, Director of Agriculture, left last week on a visit to Australia.
Mr. R. Riley, formerly a Dominion journalist, has been appointed chief assistant publicity secretary in the Prime Minister’s Department, Melbourne. Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P., who is to visit Europe shortly, will be entertained by his friends in Auckland at a farewell gathering prior to his departure. Mr. W. D. Nicholas, proprietor of the Ohinemuri Gazette, and a former resident, of South Taranaki, is on a visit to Taranaki.
The Hon. J. G. Coates (Minister of Public Works) arrived at Napier last night. He leaves this morning on a tour of the East Coast district.—Press Association.
Mr. F. T. Bellringer, New Plymouth borough manager, who has been indisposed, was able to resume duties yesterday. ■Mr. Newton King, who, during the past week has been indisposed, had sufficiently recovered to be able to attend a meeting of the Harbor Board yesterday. Mr. C. V. Houghton has resigned the position of manager of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Shipping Company, Mr. A. H. Sinel succeeding ’ fan. Dame Melba was greeted with tumultuous enthusiasm at her farewell concert in the Albert Hall, London, which was crowded. The King, Queen and Duke of York unexpectedly attended. Sir Francis Bell (Acting-Prime Minister) received on Saturday the following message from Mr. Massey, dated Vancouver, May 6: —“All well; address care of Prime Minister, Ottawa, until May 15. Leaving New York by the Carmania May 17.”
Mr. A. T. Christensen, who lias occupied the Mayoral chair iu Patea for the last two years ahd who has been connected with many other local bodies for a number of years past, was tendered a public farewell on Friday night prior to his departure, with his son, on a trip to the Homeland. Mr. Cuthbert Chambers, formerly as-sistant-manager for New Zealand for the Vacuum Oil Co., Proprietary, Ltd., has been promoted to the position of manager for Wellington, with control of Wellington, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki, Marlborough and Nelson provinces.
Acting under medical advice Sir Joseph Ward his taken on golf, and, according to a London correspondent, has been doing a good deal of it at Ranelagh. While in New Zealand Sir Joseph had practically no physical exercise at all.
A correspondent sends a report of a very successful concert given by Miss Rosina Buckman (Mrs. M. D’Oisly) and her husband at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on March 12. The house was crowded, extra seats having to be provided and Mrs. D’Oisly had a splendid reception.
Messrs. S. Natusch aud J. H. White, of New Zealand, who are holders of war scholarships, have, in conjunction with two English architects, been awarded the prize of £3OO offered for a design for a model public-house. There were seventy : eight other competitors, of whom at least fifteen are leading architects in England. The death occurred on Sunday, at the age of 70 years, of Mr. George Hale, who for a number of years has lived in New Plymouth as the proprietor of the Trocadero Private Hotel. Formerly the late Mr. Hale was farming in the neighborhood of Stratford.
Under the new defence scheme the following officers are appointed staff officers in charge of regimental districts: —Major F. H. Lampen, D. 5.0., Major H. C. Glendining, D. 5.0., Major H. S. N. Robinson, Major F. A. Wood, M.C., Major J. A. Wallingford, M.C., Major R. A. Row, D. 5.0., Captain W. I. K. Jennings, D. 5.0., Captain D. E. Bremer, M.C., Captain O. H. Mead, D. 5.0., Captain H. Peacock, 0.8. E., Captain N. W. Weir, Captain G. Dittmer, M.C. Miss Fraser, M.A., formerly. principal ■of the Wanganui Girls’ College, and for the last seven years principal of lona Girls’ College, Havelock N., H. 8., was on Wednesday farewelled by the College Council, parents, staff, and pupils on the occasion of vacating that position. She was made the recipent of several handsome gifts, and eulogistic speeches were’ made regarding the success of her work, mention being made of the fact that she had given the first five years of her service gratuitously. Miss Fraser goes for a trip to the Old Country, and, after a well-earned rest, will return to the Dominion. Miss Barr, of the New Plymouth High School, succeeds her as principal of lona.
