MARKED INCREASE SHOWN.

HAWERA COUNTY FIGURES.

The counting of the population of New Plymouth was completed yesterday afternoon, and shows that the inhabitants of the borough number 11,391, < an increase of 2087 over the 191(3 fig-. ures. The details are:—

These figures represent an increase of 30.8 per cent, in the last five years, and show that in that time New Plymouth has expanded at a much greater rate than such other North Island centres as Palmerston North and Napier. • The percentage increase at Palmerston j North is 22, while at Napier it is 13. In other words, while New Plymouth has still a smaller population than these centres, it is growing more rapid-1 ly. Auckland, which is regarded as one o-f the most progressive centres of the; Dominion, will, it is reported, show a percentage increase of 17$. per cent. The figures for the Auckland metropolitan area are expected to exceed* 156,000. An approximate return for Wellington city gives 90,443. Other official returns are:—
