BOROUGH AFFAIRS.

NEW COUNCIL BEGINS WORK.

THE FIRST MEETING

The first meeting of the newly-elect-ed New Plymouth Borough Council was held last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson), and Crs. J. Kibby, V. Griffiths, T. N. Blackball, R. L. Parkin, J. Brown, E. Dingle, and W. Rumball. After councillors had signed the usual declaration, the Mayor welcomed members to the council table.

APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEES. Cr. Kibby was appointed DeputyMayor. Committees were appointed as follows: — Finance and executive. —The Mayor, Crs. Kibby, Blackball and. Griffiths. Electric light and tramways. —The Mayor and Crs. Parkin, Rumball, Brown and Kibby.

Representatives to other bodies were appointed as follow: — Carnegie Institute. —Cr. Brown, and the following nominees of the council: Miss Clark, and Messrs. C. E. Baker and A. R. Ryder.

New Plymouth Fire Board. —The Mayor and Crs. Dingle and Rumball. Pukekura Park Board. —Cr. Griffiths and Messrs. Dempsey and A. T. Moore. Western Park Committee.—Cr. Blackball. New Plymouth Citizens’ Band (nominees of council). —Messrs. C. C. Ward and F. W. Sandford. Egmont National Park.—Cr. Dingle. Technical College Advisory Board. — Cr. Blackball.

GENERAL.

The question of appointing a representative to attend a conference between the Eltham Hydro-Electric League and Taranaki Progress League on Friday was left to the Mayor. In the course of a discussion on the rates the Mayor informed councillors that the increase of 20 per cent, in the cemetery qharges was made to meet the cost of maintenance.

Cr. Blackball advocated an increase in the sanitation rate and the compulsory installation of septic tanks at all dwellings not connected with the sewer, but the Mayor advised that such a move could not be made without an alteration to the by-law. In order not to hold up the striking of the rates, he suggested that the' question be brought up at some later date«
