SENSATIONAL FALL IN BUTTER.
COLONIAL NEGLECTED.
By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, May 6. The Government has reduced the Celling price of its butter by 70s, making New Zealand 1925, Australian 186 s, Argentine 168 s. Despite this most sensational reduction in the history of the trade, New Zealand and Australian butter is still neglected, as the Danes have lowered their price to 190 s, consumers preferring fresh-made to the older Colonial.
LONDON MARKETS.
London, May 6. Share quotation:—Mount Lyell 12s lOd and 13s 9d. At-the Bawra wool sale there was good competition at full late rates, Yorkshire taking combing merinos. The Continents competed very keenly for other sorts, particularly pieces, bellies and carbonising sorts. Practically, everything was sold.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
WESTFIELD STOCK SALES.
Alfred Buckland and Sons, Ltd., report: — At Westfield on April 28 we had a full yarding of dairy cattle, but few stores. The former are wanted and continue to sell well, good cows at profit making from £lB to £23, second grade cows £l4 to £l7, others £lO to £l3, aged and inferior £3 to £9, best springing heifers £l3 to £lB, smaller heifers £9 to £l2, small £4 to £8 10s, empty cows £1 to £2, calves 10s to £1 10s, 18month cattle £2 to £3 3s.
On May 4, at our weekly Westfield fat stock market our entry of fat cattle n,umbered 543 head (an increase of 18 on last week's supply), comprising 356 steers, 176 cows and heifers, and 2 bulls. There was again a steady demand, and in many cases last week's quotations ruled, but generally values were slightly easier. Extra choice ox sold to £1 18s, choice and prime ox £1 11s to £1 16s, ordinary plain ox £1 5s to £1 10s, prime young cow and heifer beef £1 4s to £1 2s, ordinary cow beef 15s to £1 Is, rough beef 10s to 14s per 1001 b, extra heavy prime steers ranged in price from £l5 15s to £l6 15s, heavy prime steers £l4 to £l6 15s, heavy prim® steers £l4 to £l5 10s, lighter prime steers £l2 to £l3 15s, light prime £9 to £ll, small and unfinished steers £5 5s to £8 10s, heavy prime young cows and heifers £9 to £ll 15s, lighter prime £5 10s to £8 10s, ordinary cows and light heifers £4 to £5 ss, others cows £1 10s to £3 10s.
Sheep were penned in increased numbers and included many lines of unfinished. The demand was less keen and with the exception of an odd pen of extra prime mutton, last week’s advance was Hot sustained. Heavy prime wethers made from £1 Is to £1 8s (no extra heavy prime wethers came forward), medium to heavy prime wethers 17s 6d to £l, lighter wethers 15s to 17s, unfinished wethers 12s to 15s 6d, extra special ewes from Mr. James M’Nlcol realised £1 3s 6d to £1 4s 6d, heavy prime young ewes 18s to £1 Is, heavy fat ewes 15s to 17s, lighter ewes 13s to 14s 9d, others ewes 9s to 12s 6d—(2260 sold). There was also a full entry of lambs, a big proportion being of ordinary quality, the demand and values being similar to late sales. Best prime lambs £1 to £1 3s, lighter prime 17s to 19s 6d. light 14s to 16s, unfinished stores 7s 6d to 13s 9d—(638 sold). Calves were penned in average numbers. There was a falling off in the demand and values were again lower (rough and plain calves being very dull of sale). Runners made from £3 7s 6d to £4 2s Gd, heavy vealers £2 15s to £3 2s 6d, medium £2 to £2 10s, light £1 to £1 15s, small and rough calVes 7s 6d to £l, fresh dropped from 5s —(141 sold). Pigs were yarded in large numbers and again included several lines of unfinished porkers. There was a steady demand for quality baconers and porkers and values were firm at last week’s .advanced quotations. Choppers to £6, extra heavy baconers £6 to £6 9s. heavy baconers £5 5s to £5 s l9s, medium £4 15s to £5 3s, light and unfinished £1 to £2 7s 6d, store pigs £1 Ils to £1 17s, good slips 15s to £1 ss, small 8s to 14s, weaners 3s to 75(452 (452 sold).
