PEARL PRODUCTION.
A JAPANESE FRAUD.
By Telegraph.- Press Assn.—Copyright. London, May 4.
The Star states that London jewellers and gem dealers have been defrauded of thousands of pounds by means of Japanese faked pearls, which it is impossible to differentiate from the natural Oriental pearl without breaking them. The fake is produced by a similar method to tfie Japanese cultivated pearl, except that a mother-of-pearl bead is placed in an incision in the oyster’s flesh instead of merely in the shell and remains several weeks until it is entirely covered by a thin pearl film, instead of only on'one side as in the case of cultivated pearls. The Star adds that a deputation of jewellers has asked the Board of Trade to prohibit the importation of all pearls until a test has been discovered for the detection of fakes.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
