COASTAL TRADE.
LITTLE CARGO OFFERING.
VESSELS MAY LAY UP.
During the past few days Wellingtonshipping companies have experienced" considerable difficulty in obtaining cargo® for the coastal trade. Several have been waiting in Wellington for* two or three days in order to obtain a* complete load.
The bad. conditions have been about owing to the fact that there isj very little Home cargo available foril transhipment to the minor ports. Manyj* large overseas liners have come out from/ the Old Country with their holds ab-J eolutely or almost empty. There is also very little cargo offering} at the minor ports for transhipment to; Wellington. This state of affairs exists, lespecially at such ports as Wanganui and Napier, which export almost entirely direct. There was a time when all their goods for export came to Wei-. 1 lington to be loaded on to the Home! liners, but since the overseas steamers, took to regularly visiting these ported this trade has been stopped. There is every prospect of - numerous coastal steamers being laid up unless the conditions improve considerably in the near future.—Dominion.
