AMATEURS IN PLAYS.
ANOTHER SUCCESS LAST NIGHT.
The success established by the players who participated on Wednesday night in the staging of the two plays, “The Monkey’s Paw” and “Poached Eggs and Pearls,” was quite sufficient to draw a crowded attendance at the Workers’ Hall, New Plymouth, last night. Many were turned away owing to the seating accommodation all being occupied by eight o’clock. The portrayal of the drama which occupied the first portion of the programme, was followed with interest and the story of the monkey’s pay, woven round with many sketches as to the varied sides of human nature, appealed to all. The part of Mr. White, who lives a retired life in a suburban home, was realistically carried through by Mr. Basil Hartman, and the homely character of Mrs. White, was well filled by Mrs. Claude Weston.
The comedy, “Poached Eggs and Pearls,” kept the audience in a simmer of merriment; it abounded with laughable episodes and was very capably acted by the caste. The play has a war flavor, and is based on the happenings at a canteen run by a staff of titled ladies, the events being centred round the doings of the assistants and the soldiers who patronise the institution. The public appreciation of the entertainment was emphasised at the final ensemble after the conclusion of the lasi act, by the hearty manner in which the players were received. The performance will be repeated to* night.
