HIDE MARKET.
BETTER COMPETITION REPORTED-
SALE AT NEW PLYMOUTH.
A hide sale was held in New Plymouth yesterday by Messrs. L. A. Nolan and Co., when about 600 lots were offered. Prices were on a par with the previous sale held about four weeks ago, but there was the noticeable difference on this occasion that competition for all classes was much better, by reason of the fact that buyers were offering for all lines, whereas previously there were no bids.
Ox hides, extra heavy, good substance, made up to 10jd, medium 7d to B%d, light 3d to 34d; cow, extra heavy, fid; heavy, 3|d to 4Jd; mediums, 2|d to 3sd; light, 2t4d to 2%d. The demand for calfskins was lower than has been the case for some time, owing to the fact that lines offering were not suitable • for export. In regard to sheepskins, there was no alteration of the position, there being no buyers offering.
