About 2 o’clock this morning a fire occurred at a house near the Waipoua Bridge, Masterton, owned by the Wairarapa Farmers’ Co-operative Association, and tenanted by Mr. H. Baker. Mr, Baker was absent at the time on a holiday, and the occupants of the house were Mrs. Baker and her two children, and Mrs. Wilson, an invalid. Mrs. Baker heard an explosion, apparently caused by gas in the kitchen, and this was followed by flashes and smoke. The brigade was quickly on the scene, but the house, which is built of totara, burned fiercely, and was gutted. The house, which was valued at £450, was insured in the South British office for £2OO, while the furniture of Mr. and Mrs. Baker, which is estimated by Mrs. Baker to have been worth £3OO, was insured in the Standard office for £2OO
