CHOPPING.
EXHIBITION AT PUKEKURA PARK. An exhibition of chopping was given at Pukekura Park, New Plymouth, yesterday afternoon, by J. E. She wry (world’s champion axeman), and W. Green. Both axemen had met at the. Urenui carnival a few days ago, when Shewry beat Green in a challenge match. At yesterday’s exhibition three chops were given, the blocks being 12-inch, 14-incl?, and 15-inch respectively. The wood used was poplar. In the 12-inch chop both axemen kept together. Green had to change his axe after three strokes, but both men went round to the other side of the wood simultaneously. Amidst great excitement both blocks toppled over together, and the judges gave a dead heat. The time was given as 26sec. In the 14-inch chop Green got round the wood quicker than Shewry, and succeeded in knocking his block off two strokes ahead of his opponent. Time, 26sec. In the final exhibition chop, with a 15-inch block, Green again won, with Shewry two strokes behind. Time, 39sec.
