LIBRARY MEMBERS INCREASE. NEW PLYMOUTH INSTITUTE. * Since the last-meeting of the committee 36 new members have joined the library, and 15 have left, a net gain of 21 subscribers —the same as in the previous month,” stated the monthly report of the librarian which was forwarded to last night’s meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council by the committee of the Carnegie Institute. During the year ended March 31 subscriptions paid amounted to £343, as against £248 the previous year, an increase of £95. Since last meeting 35 new novels have been added to the fiction department, and further books are coming to hand. It pays to advertise: Advertisements were inserted in the local newspapers at Eastertide, but the additional revenue directly accruing through this amounted to much more than the cost of the advertising. 1 regret to report that the sneak-thief has been busy, two magazines having been taken from the magazine table, and two papers from the reading room. In the museum I have numbered Mr. Skinner’s collection comprising over 1000 items. Three new cases have been placed in the museum, and considerably enhance its appearance.
