UNITY IN THE EMPIRE.

MAJOR BOOSE WELCOMED. A civic reception was accorded at Auckland to Major J. R. Boose, C.M.G., travelling commissioner of the Royal Colonial Institute, and Mrs. Boose. The Mayor (Mr. J. H. Gunson), in welcoming Major Boo£e, said the Royal Colonial Institute was one of those worldwide Imperial organisations, the value of which could not be overestimated. There was only one branch of the institute in New Zealand—in Christchurch —and he hoped other cities would follow suit. The Hon. George Fowlds referred to the matter of Empire trade, saying that the commercial men of Auckland were loyal to the core. The Hon. A. M. Myers, M.P., said he could speak from persopal experience of the marvellous amount of work achieved by the Royal Colonial Institute, particularly in regard to the desire for a more united Empire. Major Boose said the institute was founded at a most dangerous time in connection, with the history of the British Empire, when the school of thought known as the “Manchester School” advocated the severance of the outlying possessions from the Mother Country. The institute had for its motto “A United Empire,” and stimulation of the Imperial spirit in all parts of the world where British people reside. The speaker outlined the activities of the institute in regard to trade within the Empire and immigration. The formation of branches of the institute was one of the main objects of his tour, and he (hoped to see branches formed in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin
