LAUNCH IN TROUBLE.
OFF THE FITZROY BEACH. i TOO ROUGH TO SEND HELP Distress signals from a launch, which was apparently anchored off the coast east of the Waiwakaiho River, were noticed by an employee at the Smart Road Freezing Works yesterday afternoon between 4 and 5 o’clock, and information was sent to the New Plymouth police. Copstables Parkinson, Cantion and" Hadler, accompanied by Mr. N. A. Christiansen, proceeded to the beach near the scene with the idea of rendering assistance, but the sea w r as too heavy to launch a boat or get a life line out. Later another launch was despatched to the locality from the wharf, but thi party returned during the night and reported that they had been unable to get near enough to be of any assistance to the other boat, which was close inshore in the breakers. There was no great anxiety for the safety o-f the occupants, as it was thought the launch would probably be able to ride the seas till daylight. It is believed to contain a crew of natives. The identity of the distressed boat had not been ascertained last night. It was thought to be a Waitara launch, but inquiries there failed to produce news of any boat missing from that port.
