Mr. J. H. Gunson, the present Mayor of Auckland, was again returned unopposed.—Press Association. In the election for East Dorset Major the Hon. F. E. Guest, who has been appointed Air Minister, was re-elected un< opposed. A London cablegram reports the death of General Cowans, chief of the Commissariat Department during the war. Mr. Sam Hill, of Auckland, is on a short holiday visit to New Plymouth. It is some eleven years since Mr. Hill resided here. Sir Thomas Mackenzie and his daughter will leave on a trip to the Old Country by the Corinthic, which sails from Wellington on April 23. A telegram from Napier says Mr. J. V. Brown, M.P., and Mr. J. B. Andrew, a retiring councillor, have been nominated for the Mayoralty. A Gisborne telegram says that for the Mayoralty Messrs. George Wildish (the present Mayor), 1. Mirfield, and G. C. Munns have been nominated. A telegram from Auckland reports the death of Mr. Henry Atkinson, aged 84 years, who gave Atkinson Park, Titirangi, to the citizens ot Auckland. The death is annouonced of Mrs. W. Cameron, a very old settler of the Okaiawa district. She leaves one son, Mr. A. Sutherland, and a number of stepsons and daughters. Sir William Hall-Jones, M.L.C., will leave by the Ruapehu this week on a visit to England. He expects to return in time for the main business of next session of Parliament. Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P., will be entertained at Te Kuiti by his constituents previous to his departure at the end of the month for Egypt and Gallipoli, to visit the graves of his two sons who were killed in the late war. Sir Robert Stout, chairman of the Wellington Unitarian Free Church, will represent the New Zealand Unitarian Association at the conference of the British and Foreign Unitarian Association, to be held in London. Word has been received from Trinity College of Musjc, London, that the exhibition granted by them for the highest marks obtained in New Zealand has been won by Miss Elsa Whittle (Intermediate grade) and by Miss Mary Hickland (junior grade), both being pupils of the local Convent. Ex-Lieutenant N. L. Pownall died at the New Plymouth Hospital yesterday. Before the war the late Mr. Pownall was well known in athletic circles. He was educated at the Wanganui Collegiate School, and soon became prominent in the Rugby and swimming world. In the former he represented Wanganui at half against Taranaki, and on going to Wellington captained the athletic team. In swimming the deceased was, with two brothers, for several seasons a member of the champion water polo team of the Dominion. He also won many swimming races up to 100 ylrds. Miss Pownall, in charge of the Otaki Sanatorium, is a sister, and Mr. G. H. Pownall, president of the Wanganui Rugby Union, a brother of the deceased.
