FIRE ON STEAMER.
OUTBREAK ON THE TAHITI. THE TROUBLE IN CHECK. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A wireless message reports a fire on the steamer Tahiti, which left Wellington yesterday for ’Frisco, via the Islands. The ferry steamer Wahine and the tug Terawhiti were ordered to stand by and it was intended to send the vessels to the rescue, but later a wireless message stated the fire was held in check and there was no occasion for the steamers to leave, as the Tahiti did not want assistance. The Union Company has received information that the fire is confined to No. 1 hold, which contains wool and flax for America and general cargo for the Islands. The Tahiti turned back at seven o’clock this morning and Is esn pected to arrive at ten to-night.
