PROBLEMS OF THE EAST.. EGYPT AND MESOPOTAMIA. MR. CHURCHILL’S MISSION. By Telegraph.--Press Assn.—Copyright. Received March 28, 7 p.m. Cairo, March 25. Mr. Winston Churchill’s mission has been so successful that a good precedent has been established, thus settling Eastern regional questions, which in future will come under the Colonial Office purview. Several important suggestions will be offered Cabinet regarding which strict secrecy is enjoined, but withdrawal from Mesopotamia is indicated. It will be sufficiently gradual to permit the local Government to organise itself. The most dubious point confronting Mr. Churchill is the grouping of Aden and Somaliland under a single administration under the Colonial Office. Such hostility has been aroused among Indians and Arabs that the position will have to be entirely reconsidered.—Times Service. EGYPTIAN FINANCES. A COMPLICATED SITUATION. Received March 28, 7.30 p.m. Cairo, March 28. A complicated situation has arisen in connection with the abolition of the capitulations under the protectorate. The British Government requested the Cabinet’s views on the capitulations, as Italy does not desire their capitulation unless Cabinet is desirous. Cabinet has postponed its reply. It is an open secret that Cabinet wishes to ascertain the views of Zaghloul. Nationalist Leader, but it is well known that Zaghloul opposes the abolition, because it would terminate the policy of playing Power against Power, -and constitute Britain trustee for all foreigners. Contrawise, apart from the Nationalists, few expect Britain to abolish the protectorate if the capitulations are retained. Zaghloul arrives shortly, and a great welcome has been prepared for him.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn. I
