RACING IN AUSTRALIA. A.J.C. MEETING OPENS. SPECIALITY WINS THE DONCASTER. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received March 27, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, March 27. The weather was fine for the first day M the a.J.C. autumn meeting. The attendance was sixty-five thousand, but it was affected by rain in the forenoon. Th.& Autumn Stakes were robbed of their chief interest by the scratching of Poitrel owing to a strain. Eurythmic beciwne excited by the interest and curiosity of the crowd, and threatened to provide an unwelcome thrill by deciding not to return to the barrjer after the preliminary canter. The strange course and reverse running apparently disconcerted him. When after a little trouble he was coaxed back, he remained in the bunch, subsequently winning comfortably. The Doncaster was a triumph for the little known performer Speciality, who was never in the hunt, but comtog at the right moment, snatched a clever victory in record time for the race. Furious, by winning the Sires Stakes in 1.20, also established a record - for the race. The St. Leger was an easy contest for Salltros, who was never seriously challenged. Erasmus disappointed admirers, finishing last. The High Weight Handicap was an attractive taee, with forty<-one starters, necessitating two divisions. Result^:— HURDLES HANDICAP—Merry Bob 10.1 1, Colonel Knut 9.5 2, Stage Fright 11.4 3. Seven starters. A fine struggle In the straight# the winner (maintaining a head advantage to tte post. No time was taken. AUTUMN STAKES.—Eurythmic 9.0 1, Fluency 8.11 2, Richmond Main 9.0 3. Eight starters. Poitrel was scratched owing to a strata. Eurythmic refused to go to the barrier after the preliminary, but eventually was coaxed to do so. Old Gold and Fluency assumed command till the Leger stand was reached, when Eurythmic, leaving the bunch, won easily by two lengths. Time, 2mih. 35% sec.
DONCASTER HANDlCAP.—Speciality (Toohey) 7.9 1, Wish Wynne (O’Brien) 7.4 2, Beauford (Wood) 8.11 3. Nineteen starters. Olympic jumped from the barrier, closely followed by Romon and Wish Wynne, with Elfacre last. Wish Wynne took up the running^ round the bend, with Romon, Llsnavane, Blue Cross, and Beauford in that order, which was practically unchanged until entering the straignt, when Beauford went to the front and seemed to have the race in hand. Then Speciality shot out from the bunch and won by half a length, a similar distance separating the second and third horses. Time, lmin. 37% sec.
SIRES' PRODUCE STAKES.—Furious 1, Isa 2, Woodville 3. Nine starters. Furious was followed by Isa into the straight, where the chestnut filly seemed beaten by Woodpile by a neck, but the judges decided in fafcor of Isa. Time, lmin. 26sec. ST. LEGER STAKES.—Salitros 1, Nautical 2, David 3. Other starters were Syce Knigtyt and Erasmus. Syce Knight was first in the lead, but Salitros, taking charge at the mile, was never headed. Time, 3rain. l%sec. HIGH WEIGHT HANDICAP.—First division: Easier Week 8.6 1, Alfort I.H 2, Pollu 9.2 3. Alfort and Julia Grey made the running, Easter Week snatching 4 fine victory on the post. Time, lmin. 12%sec. Second division: Tortoise 1, Grandspark 2, Pickles 3. Won by three lengths. Time, lmin. 13%sec. TURF TOPIQS. (By "Moturoa.”) Trotting at Hawera to-day. Opening day at Riccarton and Feilding. Auckland and Wairarapa meetings conclude to-day. Mermin will have an exercise canter in the C.J.C. Champagne Stakes. Maniahera is in good order to contest hurdle events at Feeding. A good judge informs the writer that Absurdum will take some beating first start. When War Loan fell in tte first hurdle race at Bulls he sustained a broken nose. Gasbug, Duo and Pente should provide an interesting race in the St. L6ger at Ellerslie to-day. American Beauty is lai tip-top form at present, and should be worth watching at Feilding. Gallia did not have the best of luck at Bulls last week, but his followers should “double up” next start. Om.ahu was very much above himself when started at Bulls on Wednesday, and couldn’t go the pace at any part of It. Haversack was unlucky to lose the Parewanui Welter at Bulls, but a change of horsemen did the trick on the second day, and she paid a false price in a small field. They put,' it on Gaiety Girl in bundles at Bulls, but Charlie Patterson’s much boomed mare soon got the stitch chasing the speedy Automoana. "Mick” King had Super Six looking an improved horse at Bulls, and the handsome Advance gelding won the Trial in taking style. It. is a pity he makes a noise. With the sting out of the ground the Rangitikei Cup was a soft snap for Rose Wreath, who led all the way and won easily. She was not produced on the second day, but punters should not let her slip now that the going is softer. Voluble was sent out favorite for • the big race on the second day at Bulls, but he faded out of the contest. Simonides ran two close seconds at the Rangitikei meeting, and but for interference would have won on the second day. On last week’s form be must be very dangerous at Feilding. Down Feilding way the Red Ribbon—-Nursing Sister double is most in demand. Both mares run their best races on the Feilding track, and both are in good nick .at present. Hawke's Bay horses visiting Bulls had an unenviable time, one team reaching Palmerston at 3 p.m. and being held up between there and Greatford until 9 p.m. Others did not reach Bulls until nearly midnight, and there was a lot of grumbling In consequence. The majority cancelled boxes for return, and walked their horses through to Feilding Thursday. The present tightness of the money market was reflected on the Rangitikei figures last week. Attendances dropped, "gates” ditto, fields were small, and the totalisator handled £18,095 less than last year. It is quite on the cards that Feildhng and Wairarapa and other country clubs will feel the slump too. ’ Red Bob, by All Red—Miss Bobby, ran two seconds at Bulls, and is a more than useful three-year-old. Another useful maiden of the same eage which showed speed at the meeting was Bonibrook, by Boniform—Splash. Flying Nell (Quin Abbey—Brown Nell), is an erratic filly. The stockwhip had to be brought into use to induce her to do a preliminary in the Malden at Bulls, and she was equally slothful at the barrier, standing on the mark until everything else was well on the road for the winning post.
Racing clubs are doing an injustice to owners of good horses by accepting the nomination of Erin's Isle. He delayed the start each day at Bulls, and lashed out at everything will In reach. Ernie Morse, while mending the broken tapes, nearly stopped a double-banger on the head from the madheaded Maniapoto gelding. Lady Polly ran a good race in the Farewell at Bulls. She did not get the best of a straggling start, but was finishing very strongly in third place at the judge’s box. The two best dividends of the meeting—both in the region of a score—were paid by Country Air and Gold Problem on the second day. The latter received a mixed reception on returning to scale. Coolpan showed up well eacb day at Bulls, but he still leaves his best gallops on the tracks. Mr. Johnnie McDonell has quickly tired of the roguish son of Cooltrim, and that prad could, I am told, be bought for fifty now.
A Manawatu scribe ' states that Rowley Hatch has gone south to ride Gloaming ’n fi the Challenge Stakes. Hatch will also have the mount on Tigritiya in tte Great Autumn Handicap. Both Gloaming and Mermin will put up the full penalty of Iftlb in the Challenge Stakes. Gloaming’s weight will be 9.11, and Mermin’s 7.8. The Waimate Plaint Trotting Club’s annual
meeting will attract a big crowd to Hawera to-day. First-class acceptances are carded, and those paid up for include good horses like Nelson Derby, Amberite, Jimmy Richmond, Hiram Galindo and Taikorea. The first race starts at 11.45 a.m;. There have been a Jot of queer happenings at recent galloping meetings, and judging by the way several big away-from-the-course punters have anticipated glaring reversals of form things are not as clean and above board as the Inactivity of the paid stewards would suggest. The Sydney Cup, of 5000 sovs., run over two miles, is the principal event set down for decision at Randwick to-day. Latest advices from Sydney state that Erasmus, Eurythmic, Richmond Main and Kennaquhair were most favored for the event, so the public z is not afraid that weight will stop the crack stayers. Flying Master, Hautawa and Ngata were double winners at Bulls. The former Is very fast over five furlongs, but was lucky to beat Simonides on the second day. Another twenty yards and the latter would have caught him. Ngata was not intended for Bulls, but his owner entered him at the eleventh hour just to fill up. Mr. Jas. Bull had no reason to regret his action, though it was an open secret that he had his eyes on a bigger race at Feilding. Old Hautawa proved himself a versatile performer by winning over hur-, dies and on the flat, and he Is in such great* nick at present that a race at Feilding might not be beyond him. The Hawera-trained Awake Is a really good sort, and those who lost their money on her on Tuesday last were very unlucky. She will carry my dollar next pop. Up to the beginning of March the principal winning owners in the Dominion were:— Douglas Estate £6849, G. D. Greenwpod £6765, W. G. Stead £6BOO, A. B. Williams e MlO, Sir Oso. Clifford £5341, O. L. Stead £4830, and R. Hannon £4785.
The Marble Arch gelding, Arcli Marella, showed a glimpse of his long mislaid form at Rosehill recently, when with 8.10 in the saddle he made no race of the chief handicap, beating a big field very easily. Considering that he ran the mile and a half in 2min. 33%eec, he should have a royal chance in the Sydney Cup with 8.9 against his name.
