taranaki tournament. FIRST DAY’S PLAY. G. M. CHONG TOPS THE LIST. The annual Easter tournament held by the New Plymouth Club, in connection with which the Taranaki amateur championship is played, opened on the Waiwakaiho links on Saturday. The weather was dull and windy, but the wind did not spoil good stots, and though an overcast sky threatened rain, the day’s programme was completed in fine weather. The course was in splendid order, and this was reflected in the high standard of the play. A notable feature of the day was the game of G. M. Chong, ' - a young New Plymouth golfer. In the qualifying round of the championship over 36 holes, be headed the list of 61 competitors with the good score of 160, made up of two consistent rounds of 79 and 81. Chong’s *9 is particularly meritorious, for it equals bogey, and he was the only player to hand in a card under 80, while he put up a better game than such keen opponents as G. Saunders (W’anganui), G. Gudgeon (Inglewood), A. E. Ekstedt (Palmerston North), and the best of the New Plymouth Club. Chong's round in the morning gave i-im first place in the medal handicap, while in the afternoon medal handicap he tied with J. Austin, and the play off will be decided on their medal round scores this afternoon. The arrangements for the tournament were splendid, reflecting credit on the organising ability of the committee, led by Messrs. J. Paton, W H. Robertshaw, and J. Austin. The system of starting all the games from jne first tee worked very well, the last pair feeing despatched at|10.44 a.tfn., while there was a notable absence of congestion. An indication of the value of the system was provided by the fact that the last pair were playing the first hole when the first pair were on the 18th green. The links provided just sufficient room for the programme set down.
The tournament will be continued to-dav, when the principal events will be the second and third rounds of the championship. In the morning there will be a bogey match, and in the afternoon a medal handicap, while there will also be continuous putting. The details of Saturday’s play are:— THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
