FREIGHTS ON PRODUCE.
A REDUCTION EXPECTED. TGO HIGH FOR TO-DAY’S PRICES. (By Wire.—Own Correspondent.) Wellington. March 26. Mr. Massey has received the cablegram from the ship-owners mentioned in a London message offering him ships at blue book rates. The offer is for charter and not purchase. Mr. Massey will look into the offer, but he is not likely to do business.
The demands that have been made by the New Zealand Government for a reduction in the freights- on produce really have been based on a belief that the blue book rates are too high. It is understood that' slupipng control in Britain is to cease shortly and then the rates will be determined by free competition. Some shipping men believe that the rates will fall as soon as control is removed.
Mr. Massey said to-day that some method of reducing freights on produce would have to be discovered; the industry could not carry the present charges with the prices now prevailing.
