(By “Moturoa.”) The near approach of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s autumn meeting is heralded by the appearance of Mr. H. Coyle's lists of weights for the gathering, and as usual Taranaki stables are well represented. In fact, over thirty Taranaki-trained horses figure in this year's lists, and it appears safe to say that at least a score will be sent down to the gathering.
With Oratress engaged it was a foregone conclusion that Mr. H. Coyle would start his handicap for the Cup with her, and on Auckland Cup running she must be given a. chance —even with: 9.2.. Her stablemate, Client, who always runs his beat races on the Wanganui course, has hto full share with. 9.0, and the mare should hold him safe at a difference of 21b. Maloha, 8.2, also has his full desserts, and has to be taken on trust for a fourteen furlongs race. Rude, in the opinion of many, should have won the Egmont Cup, but paid dearly for his fine effort, aAd the pen has since been put through his name. However, the Fordell stable is strongly represented. Vagabond (8.7) to treated as a light of other days, and Mr. Coyle is probably safe in taking a chance with the Martian gelding. Marqueteur won the Egmont Cup with 8.3,. and now has 8.7. On Hawera running he should run well, as he seems to be staying better now. Punka won nicely at Woodville, coming from the rear at the finish of the Cup and galloping over the opposition, but she may not see the extra half-mile out at Wanganui. She has been rehandicapped, and wl.ll carry 8.4. Bonnie Heather (7.13) has his full share,, as has Bonny Maid (7.11). Sunart was fancied by the last Auckland Cup, but unfortunately went wrong on the eve of tne event. He is not overweighted with 7.10, but the writer would like to see him before assessing his chances. Woody Glen (7.10) has run a number of good races, and has a stayer’s chance. Tenterfleld is too boorish to encourage support, but Lovematch and Dusky Eve, both on 7.8, are a dangerous pair. Molyneaux has fulled to run up tg expectations during the last couple of moifths, and may pwsibly be over-rated. The best of the light-weights Is undoubtedly Esperance, who is-given a rare change with 6.10. The/balance of the under-seven-stone division are flattered by being accorded a nomination for such a race. Summed up, the elect of Tilley’s stable, together with Punka, Woody Glen, Dusky Eve and Esperance appear to be the most dangerous ones in the race. The records of the Wanganui Cup do not favor heavily-weighted horses. Dudu won away back !.n 1890 with 9.2, but no other horse has succeeded with 9st. or over, though Pinflre and Dudu (1891) each scored with 8.12, Nonette with 8.11, and Resolution and Sinapis with 8.10. The average winning weight for the last eighteen years is under 7st. 81b. The speedy Statuette has a big load, 9.11. In the Flying Handicap, and will And !,t hard to concede 41b. to the Taranaki mare. Silver Link. Parisian Diamond does not appeal with 9.2, nor does Solfanello with 8.13. Inah is sn.art round turns, and with 8.12 has a good chance. Tigritiya has hardly deserved 8.12. RossinL (8.4) is treated as a moderate, and this is about Im class. Income 8.2 is getting up in the weights, but is meeting Inah on 71b. better terms than when they met in the Flying Handicap at Hawera. Simonides can hftrdly be expected to sl ow to advantage on the Wanganui course, though Mr. Harle has no reason to complain of the gelding’s treatment. Delight may not be class enough, and Acre has not run a. decent race lately. There are some likely ones amongst the light-weights, of which Blackmail, Listowel and Kinsem read best. On the whole, Sliver Link, Inah and Kinsem appear to be most worth considering at this stage.
