RIFLE SHOOTING.

THE TARANAKI MEETING. D. ROOTS WINS THE BELT. HAWERA SECURE TISCH CUP. The Taranaki Rifle Association’s fourteenth annual tournament was brought to a successful conclusion at New Plymouth yesterday m favorable weather conditions, though as on tie first day the wind at times was very tricky, this being again especially noticeable during the firing at the 600 yards range in the teams match. D. Roots, of Hawera, who has previously won the championship twice, was in fine form at the long ranges, topping the list at both the 900 and the two 1000 yards shoots, thus winning tl?e long range aggregate and also the championship. The teams match was won by Hawera No. 2 team, which tied with the Hawera Club’s No. 1 team, and Won on the long range score. A feature of the meeting was the success achieved by members of the Hawera Club. Only one possible was scored during the day, P. Harrison (Hawera) putting on 35 at the 500 yards. As on the first day the arrangements for the conduct of the meeting were splendid, the officials concerned, viz., Captain Hartnell, Major Sandford, and Mr. W. Oliver on the range, Lieutenant Messenger and President J. Ramson in the butts, together with the secretary, Mr. E. Armitage, and the statistician, Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., deserving to be congratulated. Prizes were paid out promptly. The catering arrangements were again in the hands of the same committee of ladies, headed by Mesdamcs Oliver and Hill, and that tteir voluntary work was appreciated was manifest from the hearty cheers given them prior to the dispersal of the competitors.

In the 500 yards range of the Inglewood match published yesterday R. E. Harrison's card of 32 was transposed with his brother’s score of 30. This was corrected yesterday, with the result that G. P. Harrison's score in the match was reduced from 59 to 57, and kis place in the prize list altered from Sth to 18th. He takes 10s prize money instead of 15s, and W. Bruce (New Plymouth) takes 15s Instead of 10s. In the short range aggregate also his score is reduced to 119, and therefore the £1 for fourth prize is divided between A. H. Guy (Kaponga), J. F. McCarthy (Kaponga) and P. Palmer (Patea). In the Patea match at 800 yards A. J. Cronin (Patea) nominated as a tyro, and gets fourth prize with a score of 41, Hlroto being thus cut out.
