TARANAKI TOURNAMENT. *\ SECOND DAY’S PLAY. GOOD MATCHES WITNESSED. The Taranaki Lawn Tennis Association’s tournament was continued yesterday at the New Plymouth Club’s court in fine weather and before a good attendance of the public. The courts, which were playing keenly, were kept fully occupied during the day, and consequently a large number of games were decided. There was some keen play witnessed, especially in the ladies’ singles, when Miss M. Payton (Auckland), played Miss A. L. Brewster, the ex-Taranaki champion, being defeated in a game which went the full three sets. Miss Macfarlane, of Auckland, beat Miss McCormick, also of Auckland, in two straight sets, closely contested. The final looks like being played by the two northern ladles. The ladies’ championship doubles have also readied the final stages, Misses Payton and Macfarlane, of Auckland, having to meet Misses A. Brewster (New Plymouth) and N. McCormick (Auckland). The men’s singles look like resolving into a tussle between Wallace and Sims, of Hamilton, the latter having defeated Griffiths. In the doubles Wallace and Dickie have yet to meet the winner of the match between Nicholson and Webster and K. G. Archer and W. Sims. There should be some keen contests to-day. Detailed results are :
