GENERAL ELECTION DEMANDED. By Telegraph.—Pr*M Assn.—Copyright New York, Feb. 8. The New York Times’ Ottawa correspondent states that two successive defeats at by-elections and the defections of the members of the Agrarian Party have seriously imperilled the stability of the Federal Government, and an appeal to the country appears to be the only solution of the complex political problem. The defeat of the Government candidate on February 6 in the Peterborough by-election has been followed by a demand by the Opposition parties and even by a section of the Government and the Press, for a general election. The Government desires to postpone the appeal until a more propitious occasion, but it is considered doubtful if it can continue to command a majority in Parliament for a considerable period. BRITAIN’S GIFT OF AIRCRAFT. Ottawa, Feb. 8. It is understood that Canada has accepted from Britain 12 aifrships 150 feet long, of the scout type, and six kite balloons. * The total value of the air material presented to Canada, including 100 aeroplanes, a number of which have already been delivered, is more than a million sterling.
