IMMIGRANTS ARRIVE.
ARTISANS AND FARM HANDS. NUMBER OF DOMESTICS. The population of the Dominion was increased lately by the arrival at Auckland of 261 immigrants from the British Isles by the steamer Otarama, which had been specially reconditioned for the transport of immigrants, Irish pre-/ dominated in the company, practically all of whom had been nominated by friends in New Zealand. Included was a party of 32 domestics under a matron. The immigrants will be distributed over the Dominion as follows: —Auckland district, 86; Gisborne, 2; Wellington, 79; Napier, 20; New Plymouth, 5; Wanganui, 3; Westport, 5; Lyttelton, 26; Timaru, 2; Oamaru, 11; Greymouth, 8; Dunedin, 7; and Bluff, 7. The men of the party include a fair number of migrants will arrive jwtihin a short period. The Tofua will bring 250 immigrants, the Moana a similar number, ton to-day, will bring a similar number, and the Rimutaka, due at Auckland on i February 16, is carrying a total of 268. The Ruapehu, due at Lyttelton later in the month, will land 120. The Athenic also has a number of immigrants on board, but the number booked by this ship, as well as that intended for the Corinthic, had to- be reduced by several hundred owing to a strike of ship’s carpenters preventing necessary alterations being made.
