SHOOTING OF AMERICAN.
CAUSES TROUBLE IN JAPAN. AVOIDING DIPLOMATIC DIFFICULTY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Feb. 7, 9.30 p.m. Tokio, Feb. 7. The newspaper Okokumin which is understood to be the organ of the military party, in a sensational article, charges the Foreign Office with aiming to sacrifice the sentry who shot Lieut. Langdon, an American naval officer who was recently shot dead. This, the paper is being done to avoid a troublesome diplomatic complication with the United States and to court the goodwill of the American Government. The newspaper claims, that influential Japanese officials are criticising the Foreign Office for its interference in the case. Leading inhabitants of the village of Kochi, which is the sentry’s home, are co-operating with the prefecture, and have organised an association to obtain national support for the cause of the sentry, who is declared to have faithfully discharged his duty.—Aus.-N.Z.
