An Ulster deputation urged Sir Edward Carson to accept the leadership of the Ulster Unionist Party in the Ulster Parliament. Sir Edward Carson stated that owing to the strain he had endured during his leadership m Ulster and his war work, he felt he had insufficient reserve strength at his age to undertake the leadership, but he agreed to retain the Ulster chairmanship in the House of Commons. The position will probably be offered to Sir James Craig.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Sir Edward Carson. ex-Cabinet Minister and ex-Attorney General, is 66. He has always conducted a strenuous campaign against Home Rule, and he will be remembered as the organiser of the Ulster volunteers. Sir James Craig is 49. He has been Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry for Pensions since January, 1919. He is Unionist member for E. County Down, and has taken the keenest interest in the Ulster movement. GIRL WITH MACHINE-GUN. TRIED FOR POSSESSING ARMS. Received Jan. 26, 7.55 p.m. London, Jan. 26. Mary Bowles, a girl of sixteen, has been tried by court-martial for being in possession of a revolver, a pistol, and a machine-gun. She is a sturdy girl of the farming class. When captured she was wearing a steel body guard under her coat, and was carrying a machine-gun wrapped in a waterproof covering. She was also carrying a book entitled “Hotchkiss portable machine-gun.” The girl throughout maintained an attitude of indifference and refused to plead.
