PERSONAL.
The Hon. C. J. Parr (Minister of Education and Health) will visit Wanganui next week. Mr. J. W. Hayden and Mrs. Hayden, of New Plymouth, are leaving on a visit to England by the Port Nicholson on February 19. Mr. P. Stainton has been appointed secretary to the North Taranaki Cricket Association in succession to Mr. Waller who has removed to Auckland. Mr. J. Day, a member of the council of the Dominion Bowling Association, is visiting New Plymouth. He is staying with his son, Mr. R. Day. The resignations of Nurses E. L. Berry, K. L. Ingram and E. W. Rolston, of the New Plymouth hospital staff, were received at the monthly meeting of the Taranaki Hospital Board yesterday. In recognition of the services of Australia in the war the King of the Belgians has conferred on Mr. Wm. Hughes (Premier of Australia) 'the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Crown 6t Belgium.
Reporting to the Taranaki Hospital Board yesterday, the medical superintendent (Dr. Walker) stated that Nurses Dew. Mitchell, Ho-sking and Paynter passed the hospital and State examinations, the last thvee gaining distinction in the State examination.
Mr. Angas Parsons, K.C., has been appointed to the Supreme Court Bench of South Australia, in succession to Mr. Justice Buchanan. Mr. Parsons is a nephew of the late Mr. IT B’. Parsons, of Auckland, and a cousin of Mrs. John Paton, of New Plymouth. Mr. Tj. Waller, who has been in the New Plymouth branch office of the South British Insurance Company for several years, has been transferred on promotion to the Auckland office. Mrs. Elizabeth Ferner was elected to the Auckland Education Board yesterday, vice Dr. J. S. Reekie, resigned. Mrs. Ferner received Cl votes, while Mr. V. Potter. M.P., received 44, and Mr, W. J. Gattenby 14.
The death its announced of Mr. Walter Chapman, of West Eyreton, Canterbury, a leading New Zealand pastoralist. Deceased was at one time in the service of the Union Bank. He was born at Springbook in 1-8-57, and was educated at Christ’s College. Mr. Thomas W. Freeman, another veteran of the Maori war, recently died at his residence, Mount Eden. Deceased was formerly’ one of the famous 65th Regiment, that saw hard service in the war against the Maoris. When the regiment returned to England many of the men were allowed to remain and settle in New Zealnad. Mr. Freeman had attained the advanced age of 88 years. The death occurred in Fraserburgh, in North Scotland, recently, of Mr. George Duthie. e ngineer ’ and shipbuilder. who was well-known in .Auckland shipping circles prior to his departure for Scotland 15 years ago. His father built the well-known steamer Golden Crown, which was in the Thames trade during the “rush” days. The late Mr. Duthie served his apprenticeship in New Zealand. Sister Alice Bowd'en, sub-matron of the New Plymouth Hospital staff for the past three years, has been appointed matron at the Tauranga Hospital, and has tendered! her resignation Ito the Taranaki Board. At yesterday’s meeting the Board extended congratulations to Sister Bowden on her appointment. Sister Muir (theatre and ward sister) will suuered Mfes Bowden as sub-matron, and Sister Stanton has been appointed theatre sister.
