NEW SOUTH WALES DEFEAT WELLINGTON. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, 21. The New South Wales tennis team defeated Wellington by five matches to three yesterday. The visitors said the games were the hardest they had played in New Zealand. Results : Singles—Peacock (Wellington) defeated N. Peach (N.S.W.), 14—12, 6—4. Swanston defeated Watt, 6—4. I—*6, 6—3. Park lost to F. Peach, 3—6, o—6. Allison lost to Henderson 4—6, 4—6. Doubles.—Peacock and Swanston lost to Peach Bros. 5.— 7, 5—7. Park and Allison lost to Henderson and Watt, 6—3, o—6, I—6. Peacock and Swanston defeated Henderson and Watt, B— G, 6—l. Park and Allison lost to Peach Bros. 2—6, 4—6. WELLINGTON TOURNAMENT. Masterton, Last Night. The Wellington provincial lawn tennis championship toUrney was opened here this afternoon on heavy courts and in dull weather. In the first round of the handicap singles, M. M. Cowper beat B. W. Welch 70—64. In the first round of the men’s handicap doubles the most interesting game was that in which two Wellington "striplings,” Kerr and Ferklns, defeated Maunsel and Maunsell 70—60. In the ladies’ handicap doubles, Dr Gertrude Applegate and Miss Waldie bs?t Mrs. H. B. Maunsell and Miss Henry 50—40. In the first round of the combined handicap doubles, Cameron and Miss Mavis Martin beat J. C. Bidwell and Mrs. Bidwell 60—45- Bartman fend Miss Cochrane beat H. G. Gioves and MisS K. Groves 60—57.
