IMPENDING GENERAL ELECTIONS. NOMINATIONS DISCUSSED. By Tdecraph.--Press Assn —Copyright. Received Jan. 17, 12.5 a.m.. Capetown, Jan. 15. Nominations in connection with the impending general elections resulted in thirteen candidates being returned unopposed, including ten of the new South African Party candidates, of whom one was formerly Labor, one Independent, and four Unionists, Mr. Merriman and General Hertzog had n’o opposition. Many three-cornered contests between the Sbuth African Party, Nationalists and Labor will be fought. General Hert'zog, replying to a question at a campaign uieeting, asking whether the Opposition leaders should attend the Imperial Conference, declared that if invited he would attend out of courtesy, but would not participate in the deliberations. The Nationalists, he said, have nothing to do with Imperial closer union, nor do they admit the right of such a conference to bind them.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.
