BRITISH COMMENT.
.. HEROTO METHODS NEEDED. { • RecMtM Jan. 16, 6.10 • London, Jan. 14. The Guardian says that Fender willcertainly strengthen the team’s morale, which has been plainly going to pieces lately. It is disheartening to think, in the Adelaide match, two of our beat batsmen (Makepeace and Russell) must have caused a feeling that is far from confident. The Daily News, drawing attention to the optimistic Press comments, likeus the critics to a boy in. a churchyard whistling to keep his courage. The Star, in a splash heading, says: “Has England wasted her last chance?” and describes Collins’ fortune as that of a first favorite. The Express states that the position in which we stand needs heroic measures to save us. The Westminster Gazette hints at the possibility of Fender being capitain instead of Douglas, and adds: There is hope that changing sides will bring luck, It is freely believed here that Armstrong out-generalled Douglas as leader.—United Service.
AUSTRALIAN COMMENTS. - COLLINS' FINE RECORD. • Sydney, Jan. 15. The Herald representative states that, despite faults, Collins’ innings proves him a great batsman, especially considering the six leading batsmen fell for less than 80 runs. In four visits to test wickets Collins has aggregated 400 rune. The Englishmen, while blaming their luck, should also blame their faults. The Telegraph states that Collins mistimed many balls. At first blush one was tempted to call him lucky. Collins was dropped in the fifties and sixties by Rhodes and Hendren off Howell, the same as in Melbourne. England lost the grip on the game through bad fielding, though their ground work was superb.— Aus.-N.Z Cable Assn.
