SHOPS AND OFFICES

PROVISIONS OF THE NEW ACT. The District Inspector of Factories (Mr. W. J. Mount joy) has asked us to state that the amendment to the Shops and Offices Act, which carfie into operation on the Ist instant, does not state or limit the time for the opening or closing of shops, and does not make it compulsory for shopkeepers to close their shops at 8 p.m. on Saturday night. The position is that shops, other than exempted shops, must close at 6 p m. -On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; one o’clock on Thursdays, and nine o’clock on Saturdays. In respect to the statutory hrflf-holiday this must be observed, both in respect to closing and the employment of assistants, notwithstanding other holidays occurring in the week, with the exception of Christmas, New Year and Easter week, when under certain conditions shops may be kept open and assistants employed on the statutory half-holiday.

The position in respect to reduction of hours to be worked by assistants is that previously the Act permitted assistants to be employed for 52 hours per week. This has been altered to 48 I hours per- week, and the reduction of j hours to ibe worked does not restrict tli’fe ’! closing of shops to any specified hour I other than before mentioned. For in--1 I stance, a shopkeeper may, if he so de- ' sires, keep his shop open until 9 p.m. on ‘ Saturdays, any may employ his assist- ‘ ■' ants eleven hours on that day. If this were done a shopkeeper could on Mon- ‘ day, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday ■ work his assistants eight and a quarter ; ; hours, say from 8.15 a.m. to 8 30 p.m., or I 8.45 a.m. to fl p.m., and on the statut- ' * ory half-holiday from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. ’ ■ or 9 a.m- to 1 p.m. Thuft the time works '•nut exactly within the limit, of the 48 hours. If any shopkeepers are in doubt on ’ I any matter concerning the Act, and they call at the office of the District Inspec- ‘ I tor of Factories,' Silver Street, New . . Plymouth, they will receive gratis any * information desired. 1
