WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Jan. 5. The Returned Soldiers’ Association met on Tuesday for the purpose of discussing the remits to come before the Dominion executive, including oru. regarding the Asiatic question, and another on the subject of pensions. In respect to pensions, the committee were perfectly satisfied with the allocation made by the board, but thought the £50,000 granted by Parliament was far from adequate to meet so many pressing cases.
It is the usual practice amongst farmers in this district during the Christmas and New Year holidays to cut their grass for hay. Many farmers took advantage of the fine ,weather prevailing this year, ajid have some good crops. In fact, some have shut their paddocks up for a further crop. The Clifton Football Club are holding another committee meeting on Friday evening to further the preliminaries for the monster sports gathering to be hold about the end of February. I understand the prizes are going to be big, and should draw big acceptances. A collection taken up by the Waitara Municipal Band on New Year’s Eve resulted in the magnificent total of £9 7s 3d being secured. The band is in need of funds for new instruments and stands, and they certainly deserve all the help they can get. A native noticed Smoke issuing from Messrs. Lund and Sampson’s doorway in .McLean Street recently. On investigation it was found that the bottom of the door of their premises was alight. It is assumed a careless smoker had thrown a wax vesta in the doorway, and had set light to the woodwork. Fortunately, it was found before any damage had been done. Mr. H. Brabant, of the local Post Office, who is about to be married, was the recipient of a cruet stand from his fellow officers on Tuesday. The postmaster, in making the presentation, spoke of Mr. Brabant’s good qualities, and the regard they all felt for him. They all wished him a happy and prosperous life. Messrs. Roberts, McDavitt and Stewart also voiced similar sentiments.
Messrs. P. Peek and L. Sampson came to grief on a motor cycle whilst travelling to Stratford last Monday. They were turning the corner branching off towards Inglewood from the Waitara— New Plymouth Road, when they got into some soft sand, and the cycle somersaulted. After a rest they continued their journey, but the owner (Mr. P. Feek) has been in extreme pain with his shoulder since, and was put under the X-ray in New Plymouth to-day. Mr. Sampson came off with a shaking.
