IMMIGRANTS TO ARRIVE.
TOTAL OF 1589 EN ROUTE SKILLED TRADESMEN AND DOMESTICS. No fewer than 1589 immigrants are due to arrive in New Zealand from England within the four and a half weeks ending February 11The majority of the total are coming out under the immigration scheme (nominated), and British overseas scheme, and they comprise mechanics, farmers and farm-laborers, artisans, miners, shop assistants, various tradesmen, general laborers, and domestic servants. Of the last-mentioned class, seventy-nine are passengers by the Pakeha, and are in charge of a matron and two sub-matrons. Many of the expected arrivals are married, with children ; many have friends and relatives in the Dominion; all should prove welcome and valuable additions to fhe population. The first of the vessels to arrive (there are five) will be the Paparoa, which is due at Wellington to-day with 56 saloon and 197 third-class passengers, the latter all nominated in New Zealand. The Pakeha is due on Sunday, the 16th inst., With 406 immigrants for the North Island and 144 for the South Island. [Qhe Ruahine, which is due at Wellington on January 19, has on board 47 first-class, 84 second-class, and 390 third-class passengers—a total of 552; tie Otarama, due at Auckland on February 6, 12 saloon and 243 thirdclass; and the Rimutaka, expected at Auckland on February 11, 64 first-class and 214 third-class passengers. A very thorough system has been evolved by the Immigration Officer (Mr. H. D. Thomson) and his staff for dealing with the new-comers when they land, for providing them with accommodation, and assisting those who have no friends here to obtain employment. Each new arrival has the free right, when booking at London, to nominate a port of destination, and the authorities here see that they reach the place to which they desire to go.
