Mr. Andrew Fisher, the retiring High Commissioner for Australia, has returned to London and will be publicly farewelled (says a cable message). It is understood he contemplates re-entering Federal politics, probably the Senate.
A cable from London says it is understood Lord Reading, the Chief Justice, has accepted the Vice-Royalty of India. Several names have previously been mentioned, but no official announcement has yet been made.
It is expected that Colonel G. F. C. Campbell, Secretary to the Treasury, will, on his return to New Zealand, be offered the position of Public Trustee. He is at present absent on a business and health recruiting trip to Great Britain and Europe. He attended the finance conference in Brussels.—Press Association.
Mr. John Henry Masters, of Taylorville, Greymouth, died on Saturday last after a long illness. Deceased, who was 38 years of age, was very widely and favorably known in the Grey district. For many years he kept a store at Taylorville till ill-health compelled him to relinquish it.
Ensign Arnold, who has been appoihted to the command of the Eltham Salvation Army corps, arrived from Masterton by'the mail train last night. He was accompanied by Mrs. Arnold. Adjutant and Mrs. Simpson have left to take charge of the Dunedin City Corps. The death took place at Manaia yesterday of Mrs. Margaret Hughes, mother of Mr. Dan. Hughes, of New Plynputh. The late Mrs. Hughes was an old resident of the district, and had many friends throughout Taranaki. She was 70 years of age.
