PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH. AUCKLAND v. CANTERBURY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. A Pluuket Shield match between Auckland and Canterbury commenced yesterday, in perfect weather, and on a splendid wicket. Auckland batted first and made 291 (N. C. Snedden 91, Hemus 25, Horspool 16, Smith 30, Lusk 29, Anthony not out 55, C. A. Sneddon 16). Sandman took 4 wickets for 52, and Read " for 69. When stumps were drawn Canterbury had lost 3 wickets for 70 (Blunt 41, D. Reese 13). THE HAW! E CUP. GISBORNE v WANGANUI Gisborne, Jan. 1. The first match this season for th© Hawke Cup commenced to-day, the challengers being Wanganui. The weather was fine. The game was played on a special wieket on the Association’s new grounds. Wanganui, batting first, scored 116—Hyder 20, Williams 24, Darby not out 18, Holland 15. Bowling: Scholium 8 for 39, Kahlenberg 2 for 46, Blair 0 for 17. Poverty Bay scored 171 for eight wickets—'McMahon 49, Reeves 48, Drake 23, Ellis 17. WELLINGTON v. HAWKE’S BAY Wellington, Jan. 1. The representative cricket match, Wellington v. Hawke’s Bay, commenced to-day, under Ideal conditions, and on an excellent wicket. Wellington batted first, and compiled the respectable score of 381—Brice 107, Lamber? 89, Baker 57, Hlddeston 41, Bray 22. For the visitors, O’Connell secured 7 wickets for 88. sending 'down a slow break ball. The other bowlers were costly. The fielding was not up to representative standard. Hawke’s Bay made a poor showing, considering the excellent wicket, all being out for 95. For Wellington, Lambert took the heaviest toll, three wickets for three runs. The matchi will be resumed on Monday.
WELLINGTON v. MANAWATU. Palmerston N., Last Night. In a match between Manawatu and Wellington the home team made 197 in their first innings, to which Wellington replied with 117 for 6 wickets.
