Fine weather, gopd speculatkm and interesting racing were the features of Derby Day at Ellerslie. Proceedings opened with the Ferguson Handicap, for which • Early Dawn was rightly the main selection. After leading for th& most part In the Shortland Plate of one mile, on the opening day. the favorite tad to be ridden hard in the straight to get up- in time to gam a narrow victory from Miss Ellice, with Queens Up and Tieki next In order. Gray’s mount (Clonmel) was not the goods, though he goes a merry five furlongs at his best. Paddington Green failed to get further than the second fence in the hurdles, owing to the gear becoming detached, and his rider being unseated. The winner turned up in Thrace, wto raced up to the leaders in the middle stages, and won all out from Oakleigh, Tenacious and Khartoum in that order. The latter has evidently had enough. The winner Improved on his race of the opening day. Menmln never gave his supporters any anxiety In the Midsummer Handicap, for Gray had the favorite in the lead early, and be really carried his big load first past the post with such ease as to suggest that he will strip a better horse in the Royal Stakes than when The Hawk threatened to rob him of the honors In the Foal Stakes. He will now be a warm favorite on Monday. How good the son of Absurd really Is has yet to be discovered. Landslide made matters warm in the Derby, being in front with Vespucci for the most part, when Gasbag came along from third position, and in a good finish the favorite won from Mason’s charge, who did not receive everything his own way, especially at the home turn. Landslide was a fair third, and Winter Wind fourth l . The latter may turn out more than useful directly. Up to this race every No. 1 on the card had wdn, but a Aange was now to come, for though Humbug was elected favorite, he could do no better than finish second In the Newmarket Handicap to King Abbey, who showed a lot of pace out in front of Gloaming and Co. in the Islington Plate mile. GeoffreY may have wftn had his boy been more alert. In the early part he was finishing third from Doveiet, which has been unlucky each day in just failing to gain the money. Golden Bubble disappointed badly, and it looks as if his effort oyer the five furlongs on the middle day found the bottom of him.

£ mild surprise Was in store for punters in the A.R.C. Handicap, for few expected Tinohoro to cee out the mile and a hdlf. However, when young Glover got his mount to the front he kept him at it, and Hannon’s hack struggled on gamely, and won from Oratress, with Tenterfield, who was always third, and Prince Willonyx fourth. The weight evidently told on Uncle Ned and First Salute, while Starland failed to run up to expectations. Molyneaux was never dangerous, but may improve now he has had one race mi the right-handed track. Gray’s mount. Formalin, carried a lot of money in the Ellerslie hack event, which was an easy thing for Counter Attack, who slipped away from the field early, and won from Over There and Explode, who were in line for second money. Bonnie Heather ran unplaced, and has evidently had enough. Counter Attack is an English-bred horse running in the same ownership as Arrowsmith. It is said the right people threw in for a good win. Despite the fact that Tigritiya had the welter impost of 9st 91b in the Glasgow Handicap, she was a staunch favorite, but had to strike her colors to Miss Mimic, which got to the front early and maintained her position past the post from the favorite, who made a game bid. Heather Sprig was th!.rd just in front of Bute Sound, who should turn out good later on. Missgold disappointed her people. The win for Miss Mimic was overdue. for she has always been showing great track times without surviving. Gray is to ride Emerald - Hill in the five furlongs hack on Monday, which should insure plenty of support for him, as he ran a speedy few furlongs this morning, and has showed up in the past in the open class without winning. He may meet some strong opposition from Miss Ellice at five furlongs; also Going Up, who was unlucky on the second day. It will be a big field, and Arch Margot may be one of the others to improve on to-day’s race, for it was wanted. FOURTH DAY’S ACCEPTANCES. Auckland, Last Night.
