THE HOLIDAYS.

STRATFORD RACES TO-MORROW, BOWLING AND -CRICKET MATCHES. To-day, New Year's Eve, will majfc the beginning of the second phase of the holidays, and the day will, no doubt, see large crowds of shoppers and L'sllday makers in the various towns in Taranaki. To-night the shopper® will not disperse, till a late hour, as witnessing. the passing of the old year always has an attraction.

Holiday fixtures will provide a variety of amusement for pleasure-seekers in Tnranakt; To-morrow and Monday tha Stratford Racing Club's annual meeting will be the goal for sportsmen, and special train arrangements have been announced) in connection with the fixture, so that a very big assemblage may be anticipated. The seaside picnic, to o« held' on the Ngamotu Beach to-morrow, yearly grows in popularity, and on this occasion should provide a particularly enjoyable outing to picnickers,, The fine stretch of beach provides a very pleasant resort, and the programme drawn up by the committee includes a number of novelties, such as the treasuq! hunt and ju jitsu competition, in addition to the several events for thq special benefit of the children. Delayed I rains have been arranged for the benefit of visitors from Central and South Taranaki.

The many attractions at Ngaere Gardens should be well patronised iby parties making an outing during, the holidays. and in addition to arrangements for New Year's Day, the proprietors announce that a special musical programme will be given on Sunday. A day at th 6 Mountain has numerous attractions, and numbers of visitors have made the trip to the North Taranaki hostelry during the week, in addition to the large crowd of guests staying at the House. This is a good centre from which to visit' the various scenic spots, and a tour of whip# gives a pleasant day's enjoyment.

Howlers from many Taranaki clubs will he engaged in the rinks tournament on 'the New iPlym|outh,. Fitzroy , aix} , West End greens to-morrow and Monday, under the auspices of the Taranaki centre. A cricket match between representatives of the two Taranaki divi* sions, North and South, takes place at ' Hawera on Monday, and another contest affording, perhaps, more interest to enthusiasts will be the inter-provincial fixture, Wanganui versus Taranaki, which is to be held at New Plymouth on Fri# day and Saturday, January 7 and 8
